Is it Nightie or Nighty? Pyjamas or Pijamas?

This is literally an everyday question for me!

However I do find it fascinating and it does need a discussion because I believe no one should be ridiculed or told they are wrong when spelling their choice of sleepwear.  Most likely it's been a lifetime of spelling them this way for you, without severe incident, no one got hurt, offended or reported you.

Personally you can spell or call them however you like as long as you get there in the end and usually most know what you're talking about.

You may get the odd, what's a brunch coat?  Well my friends that's truly an age thing as my nightie nostalgic die hards will have the clearest of brunch coat images on speed dial in their child hood memories file.

For example: after dinner it's bath time then into your nightie and brunch coat before dessert of butterscotch brickle (now called hokey pokey) only if you had finished all your veggies.  Well at least that's how it rolled at my Grandma's house for sleepovers.

Only because I have to make sure I get it right for technical reasons online, please know I have done the research and not in a dictionary but google of course, so let's get it out in the open, throw caution to the wind and I want to know via an email or a text from you, what would you honestly type in if you're looking for your favourite cotton nighties?

Firstly a 'nightie' is the shortened version of a 'nightdress' or 'nightgown'.  So you will see throughout The Nightie Shop I am inclusive and naming them a delicate mixture all of the above. I am torn about the spelling 'nighty', I feel like I should even call my store 'The Nightie/Nighty Shop' just to be fair to both parties.

A quick google search will bring up the spelling 'Nighties' mostly and that's okay, as the young ones say these days...... 'It's not that deep'

It is fascinating how many words there are for basically 2 styles of sleeping garments, one a dress piece, the other a seperate top and bottom.

Are you ready ?

Nighties, Nighty, Nightdress, Nightgown, Night Garment, Nightwear,  Nightshirt, Night cloth, Night slip, Nana nightie/nighty, Sleepwear, Sleep gown, Maxi, Maxy, Pijamas,  Pajamas, Pyjamas, Pj's, Jamas.

And at the end of it all, there is no right or wrong, it truly does come down to what you called them as a child, it usually sticks.

So I am looking forward to your emails on the topic : moira@thenightieshop.com.au

Perhaps I have even missed a few of your favourites but at least we have it all out in the open now, so don't be afraid to call or spell them the way you know and love.

Sincerely Yours Always,

Moira
